Markup is profit measured against what something cost you, which is how most shops price stock. Give it any two of cost, selling price and markup percentage, and it works out the rest, along with the equivalent margin percentage.

How to use Markup Calculator

Step-by-step guide to the boxes below. Open it only if you need help.

  1. 1
    Cost Text

What one item costs you to buy or make.

    Example: 60

The price you sell it for. Fill any two of the three boxes.

    Example: 90

  3. 3
    Markup % Text

Percentage you add on top of the cost, e.g. 50 means the price is cost x 1.5. Leave empty to have it calculated.

    Example: 50

  4. 4
    Press “Calculate”

Click the button under the boxes. If something is missing or not valid, a short message tells you which box to fix.

  5. 5
    Read your result

Your answer appears under the button, with a short note in plain words where it helps. Change any box and press again to compare different numbers.

Fill in any two of the three boxes and leave one empty.

Markup Calculator FAQs

How is markup different from margin?
Markup divides profit by cost; margin divides profit by selling price. A 50% markup on a $60 cost gives a $90 price, which works out to a 33% margin, not 50%.
Why would I price by markup instead of margin?
Markup is simpler if you always start from what you paid for stock. Margin is more useful when you are working backward from a target profit percentage.
How do I calculate markup?
Markup % = (selling price − cost) ÷ cost × 100. A cost of 60 sold at 100 is a 66.7% markup.
How do I set a price from markup?
Selling price = cost × (1 + markup). A 50% markup on a cost of 80 gives a price of 120.
