Estimates how long a file will take to download or upload at a given connection speed, handling the common mix-up between megabits (Mbps) and megabytes (MB/s).

How to use Download/Upload Time Estimator

Step-by-step guide to the boxes below. Open it only if you need help.

  1. 1
    File size Text

The size of the file you want to download or upload.

    Example: 1

  2. 2
    Size unit Choose one

MB (megabytes) for normal files, GB (gigabytes) for big ones.

    Choose one: MBGB

  3. 3
    Connection speed Text

Your internet speed. Providers usually advertise it in Mbps, so check your plan or run a speed test.

    Example: 50

  4. 4
    Speed unit Choose one

Mbps means megabits per second, the usual way plans are sold. It is 8 times smaller than MB/s.

    Choose one: Mbps (megabits/sec)MB/s (megabytes/sec)

  5. 5
    Press “Estimate”

Click the button under the boxes. If something is missing or not valid, a short message tells you which box to fix.

  6. 6
    Read your result

Your answer appears under the button, with a short note in plain words where it helps. Change any box and press again to compare different numbers.

Download/Upload Time Estimator FAQs

Why is my real download slower than this estimate?
Advertised speeds are a maximum, not a guarantee — overhead, network congestion and server-side limits usually make real transfers slower.
How do I convert Mbps to MB/s?
Divide by 8, since a byte has 8 bits. A 100 Mbps connection transfers at most about 12.5 MB per second.
What is the difference between a megabit and a megabyte?
A megabyte is 8 megabits. Internet speeds are usually quoted in megabits, while file sizes use megabytes.
Why is my upload usually slower than my download?
Many home connections have much lower upload speed than download speed.
