Margin is profit measured against the selling price. Give it any two of cost, selling price and margin percentage, and it fills in the third, plus the profit and the equivalent markup percentage.

Margin Calculator FAQs

Is margin the same as markup?
No, though people mix them up. Margin is profit divided by the selling price. Markup is profit divided by the cost. On the same sale, margin is always the smaller number.
What is a healthy margin?
It depends heavily on the industry: retail often runs 20 to 50 percent, while services and software can run much higher. There is no single right answer.
How do I calculate profit margin?
Margin % = (selling price − cost) ÷ selling price × 100. If something costs 60 and sells for 100, the margin is 40%.
What is the difference between gross and net margin?
Gross margin considers only direct costs. Net margin also subtracts overheads, interest and taxes.
