USA Federal Income Tax Calculator

Estimate your US federal income tax based on your income and filing status, using the 2026 marginal tax bracket structure and standard deduction. A single filer earning $60,000 falls across two or three federal brackets rather than one flat rate — only the portion of income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, which is why an effective tax rate always comes out lower than the top marginal rate.

USA Federal Income Tax Calculator FAQs

Does this include state income tax?
No, this covers federal tax only — state tax rules and rates vary and would need to be calculated separately.
What is a marginal tax bracket?
It means only the portion of your income that falls within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, not your entire income at the highest rate you reach.
Does this apply the standard deduction?
Yes, by default. It takes the 2026 standard deduction for your filing status ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household) off your income first. If you have already worked out your taxable income, choose "None" so it is not deducted twice.
Does filing status really change the tax owed?
Yes significantly — bracket thresholds differ substantially between Single, Married Filing Jointly, and Head of Household, so the same income can produce different tax amounts.
