BMI Calculator for Asians
BMI calculator for Asians, made for people in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and anyone with South Asian roots. In many Asian populations the health risks linked to extra weight, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, begin at a lower BMI than in Europeans, because Asians tend to carry more body fat, and more of it around the belly, at the same BMI. A WHO expert consultation in 2004 therefore suggested extra public health action points at a BMI of 23, 27.5, 32.5 and 37.5, while keeping the standard 18.5, 25 and 30 as the international classification. This calculator shows both: your category on the Asian scale (18.5 to 22.9 is low risk, 23 to 27.4 is increased risk, 27.5 or above is high risk) and your standard international category. For example, an adult who weighs 65 kg at 1.65 m has a BMI of 23.9, which is normal on the international table but already in the increased-risk range on the Asian scale. It also shows the weight range that is low risk for your height. Some countries publish their own national cut-offs, so treat this as a guide and ask your doctor.
