It divides the top and bottom by the same number, their greatest common divisor, until nothing more divides both. The value of the fraction does not change.
What about improper fractions like 22/6?
They are reduced too (11/3) and also shown as a mixed number, 3 2/3.
How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. For example, 12/18 divided by 6 gives 2/3.
How do I know if a fraction is fully simplified?
If the numerator and denominator share no common factor other than 1, it is in simplest form.
