Enter the three sides of a triangle to get its area (using Heron's formula), perimeter, all three angles and its type, or just a base and height for a quick area.

How to use Triangle Calculator

Step-by-step guide to the boxes below. Open it only if you need help.

  1. 1
    Side a Text

Length of the first side. Enter all three sides, or use base and height instead.

    Example: 3

  2. 2
    Side b Text

    Length of the second side.

    Example: 4

  3. 3
    Side c Text

    Length of the third side.

    Example: 5

  4. 4
    Base (alternative to sides) Text

Alternative: the bottom side of the triangle, if you know its height instead of all three sides.

  5. 5
    Height Text

Alternative: the straight-up distance from the base to the top point.

  6. 6
    Press “Calculate”

Click the button under the boxes. If something is missing or not valid, a short message tells you which box to fix.

  7. 7
    Read your result

Your answer appears under the button, with a short note in plain words where it helps. Change any box and press again to compare different numbers.

Enter either all three sides, or a base and a height, not both.

Triangle Calculator FAQs

What is Heron's formula?
A way to find a triangle's area from its three side lengths alone, without needing an angle or a height. It uses the semi-perimeter (half the perimeter) in the calculation.
Why would three side lengths not form a triangle?
The triangle inequality: the two shorter sides added together must be longer than the longest side, otherwise the three lengths cannot close into a triangle at all.
How do I calculate the area of a triangle?
Area = ½ × base × height. A base of 6 and a height of 4 give 12.
How do I find the perimeter?
Add the three side lengths.
